You can. of course, fit two rear 7" pairs, and Ive seen a few mismatched sets like this being sold by Simon Butterworth. Unfortunately, you could probably buy two matched sets with centres for less than buttercup charges.

The same applies to series two 944s which have Carrera 2/4 wheels fitted. The rears are similar in size to S2 wheels, but the fronts are 1" narrower 6"s...

But not illegal just because they are narrower! How do you think winter tyres get approval, they're normally narrower than original & very often steels to boot. I suspect in Germany it might be because the build is not TUV approved but we ain't got that anal here (yet)!

Spacesavers in the UK are illegal but because they have euro approval then they get the nod here. But the car has to be specc'd with originally. e.g. you can't use a spacesaver on a car that was never originally designed for it.

Actually I think that is a bit of a grey area, but my understanding was always that is because it's the tyre not the rim, that it's a different width and speed rating and, and it's different from the other end of the same axle, which is clearly a much bigger issue than fitting OE size tyres on a 1" narrower rim on both front corners.

Edited to acknowledge Jim got in before me with more info.

so should they pass an MOT, also the OPC who services my car (with 6 inch rims on the front) have never mentioned this

Originally 944 owners were supposed to call for free assistance in the event of a puncture, rather than use the supplied spare wheel!

Will the car pass an MOT? Yes, how would the tester know. Whether the OPC should have drawn your attention to it is another matter.

Legalities aside; fitting front rims that are one inch narrower than the cars were originally supplied with, is not exactly a 'demon tweek', is it?

It's a modification so you should tell them, then they will tell you. My guess is they will charge you more.
