Hi all,

Any idea's on the following!

1:
this morning after startup the oil warning light stayed on. I checked the level when it was still cold and it was around 3/4 between min/max. why is the light on when the level seems fine? oil pressure reads 4-5 bar.

2:
I noticed a bit of 'mayo' around the oil cap. It's running mobil 1 15-50W fully synthetic which was changed around 2000 miles ago. I'm a bit worried my daily commute of 6 miles in cold weather is damaging the engine?

3:
my speedo aslo tells me i'm cracking warp speed 0-20 times, no movement from the needle until i hit 20, then shoots right up there!

thanks chaps 8)

The mayo sounds normal, not something to worry about. The speedo ‘sticking’ until getting past 20 is often a problem with the sender and a precursor to it getting worse (I eventually lost all response from the speedo after it got more and more intermittent. Replaced the sender and everything was fine).

No idea about your warning light, I’m afraid.

Mayo sounds like condensation, do you often take it on short drives? It generally clears up after a good run.

Warning light could just be a sensor.

My old turbo used to suffer with mayo in the colder months. It's normally just condensation from short journeys. Check the header tank for oil in the water just in case.

My speedo does this too. But I don't have a sender as mine's an '85. Could be the actual clock itself, as if I tap the dash it comes straight on!

Oil pressure could be a faulty sender or something bigger like the pump.

edited op to say the oil pressure reads 4-5 bar, pressure has always been good.

my daily commute is 5 miles each way, am i right in thinking the mayo is to do with the engine never really getting warm on short journeys? i do drive the car regularly just for fun too, pretty sure it gets up to temp when i'm out on a hoon!

as for it clearing up...i'l re-check today as i did about 250 miles this weekend including some of north wales finest :D

If it's the oil level warning lamp then they all seem to have slightly different sensitivities. My Turbo comes on half way between the min and max, my S2 comes on at 2/3rds towards the minimum. Top it up a little until it goes out.

Mayo in the filler is pretty standard when the weather gets cold and damp, it is also pretty standard for a car doing short journeys and never having a chance to really 'boil' the water vapour out of the oil.

Yup agree with Paul above. The mayo problem is also because the filler is miles long & sticks out in the colder air. Mine did it even when it was used on long runs so don't worry.
As for the speedo try thumping the dash! It always wakes mine up, it's temp related as well, in hot weather mine is fine the colder it gets the lazier it is.

mayo in the cap is nothing to worry about if you do short journeys as the filler neck is long and prone to a lot of condensation especially as is turned a bit colder now

My speedo used to not work below 40. I replaced the sender & then it worked from 20 like yours. But the more I used it the better it got. It has now almost fixed itself. Used regularly it works all the time. It's been off the road for a couple of weeks waiting for parts & driving it home tonight it stuck again. Thumping the dash works every time

Yup at some point I intend removing & stripping the speedo & fitting a new trip gear (from the USA) & giving it a good clean.

I had the same issues with my 944 just after I bought it, I had parked the car on a steep hill nose upwards.
When I came to start it the oil level warning light was on but the pressure was OK and the level on the dip stick was full.
I took it to a Indy in Cowbridge South Wales (I was visiting the area) he checked it over and told me the level float in the sump was stuck, his advice was to give the car a good run to get it nice and hot then to park it on the same hill with the nose facing down.
He-presto all working again, it the float sensor is faulty it's a sump off job.

Roger Williams.
