I purchased a 1988 944S almost on a whim when it came up for sale in my village and then spent many sleepless nights worrying about the complexity and cost. That said, the performance and handling was amazing when compared to my MG Midget and the car took pride of place. There was a long list of faults to remedy, and an approaching MOT to get through before a belt change. I worked through the fault list, the car getting better with each fix, was preparing for the MOT when the cam belt snapped prematurely. :( . It may not be worth fixing.

I'm really after a 944 S2 coupe, preferably in red with low miles. Something I could show without being embarrassed. Something I can preserve and maintain without hesitation using specialists when required.

Having scanned piston heads, ebay, car and classic, auto trader etc. and driven the length and breadth of the country there is nothing that fits the bill. There was a S2 red Cabriolet in Nottingham with 52k miles in exceptional condition for 12.5k but I need a coupe. Another cab at Bletchley with 72k miles needing some TLC at 7450 was also rejected for the same reason. The others have all suffered from rust in the sills, especially when you take the B pillar post out.

Is there an enthusiast out there with an S2 in good condition who is looking for a change and needs someone to carry on the fine work? If so please let me know, any help or leads gladly accepted.

you now know the value of belts first before anything else, when they are of unknown age, a sad and expensive lesson

Thanks for the pointer to this one. I viewed and test drove the car last week but it did not live up to the advert. It would have been exactly the sort of car I'm after; low mileage, coupe in red. Does anyone know of such a car that is looking for a new home?

Thanks again

Howard

That's a shame.

Maybe worth considering a Turbo as well?

There have been a few nice examples up for sale recently.

Frenchy over on PCGB forum was posting about a very low mileage S2 recently, and the owner was considering selling - maybe worth trying to contact him to see if he has anymore info.

This is the one I've just put the link up to. Paul is Jimmy's friend and it really is a stunner.

Paul Ruddy's S2 is a peach.

But that wasn't the one in was thinking of. I'm sure it was Frenchy that was posting about one that had done less than 2k miles.

Either way, it Paul is thinking of selling, it would be well worth a look Howard.

All,

Can I just thank everyone who responded with help, advice and guidance. When looking for an S2 you really have to tread carefully as there are a large number out there which appear shiny in the picture which is further confirmed by the advert, but in reality are rot boxes. Sills seem the main issue and it is well worth pulling out B post vent, getting a torch and peering into the sill internals. Many times you don't need a torch as you are greeted by daylight shining through from above. You can also spot advanced rust where the rear wheel arch joins the wing with no signs showing on the outside of the wing. It's also a surprise how rotten the sills can be but still enable the car to get an MOT certificate with no advisories. Suppose it must be the 6 inch rule from any suspension or body mount rule.

Anyway my nightmare of driving all over the country looking at 944's (many of which were rejected after 5 minutes) is over. I upped my budget time and again, rejected those not up to scratch and picked a beauty; ironically not from an advert but through a return post on a forum.

Obviously having picked it up the weather has taken a turn for the worse leaving it abandoned in the garage, but the forecast is set to improve as the week goes on.

Again, thanks everyone. Hope to see you at a club event.

Howard
