If your sitting down & the phone is to hand.... The Samritans number is 0800 xxxxxxxxx then it was around £1,400 for the sill rebuild etc.
The whole MOT including 2 x exchange wishbones, exhaust etc. was £2,000! Doesn't sound too bad if you say it quick
Mind you Mrs TR7V8 still brings it up in conversation though.... women why don't they ever forget?

Jon Mitchell delivered my 944 T this week which he fitted new sills in while he prepared it. Jon said the genuine sills were £250 per side. Haven't got the quote for finishing and spraying yet. Man turned up today to have a look and there was much sucking of teeth and muttering though

At least the genuine ones fit - the Club Autosport parts never do - not 944s anyway.

Kiwiland is absolutely fantastic thanks, Jim; not a single regret, especially now we have a few acres of it of our own.

I really don't know what to do with the 944, I'd like it to be here, but based on the mileage the Mini is doing I'd never use it. The nearest tracks are a decent drive away so it's not going to get much use as a dedicated track slag and it's too low to get out of the drive for a road blast in all probability. I'm also looking to do more off-road than on-track driving with my weekends as there is some pretty interesting 4wd country on my doorstep. Then again it's not a good time to be selling it coming into a British (and economic) winter and it needs to be somewhere where it will be properly looked after.

My brother moved over to New Zealand over five years ago. He lives in Renwick, which apparently is the sunniest bit at the top end of the south island. Since moving over there he has only run 4x4s, or trucks as they call them - because like Fen says there are lots of tracks to go exploring. He says he has seen a couple of 944s knocking around, and if you have a look there's usually a couple for sale out there.

I know he'll never come back, and I don't blame him, but it's been nearly six years since I last saw him.

Yup quizzed Fen hard about his move out there, I'd go like a shot & am still below the max age (just!), but Becky ain't having none of it!

I think you need to want the right things to make it work for you. We wanted a place in the country with a bit of land - something we realised was not likely to happen in the UK. We now have close to 8.5 acres with an 1890's homestead on it which is just off State Highway 52 - which has approximately two dozen users a day as far as I can tell! I commute 1h40 to Wellington 4 days a week which leaves most Kiwis looking for my second head, but I used to drive 97 miles each way in the UK to work and the train costs under £400 for a 3 month season ticket so it's all but free.

On the other hand if you like city life, or place much value on shopping then NZ probably isn't for you. Supermarkets aren't in the Tesco league and (I'm told) there is nothing as good as Next etc. for clothing. What I notice is lack of supply of things like cars and electronics. My Mini was off the road for a day when I got a shard of metal in its tyre because I had to get a replacement from Auckland, and when it was in for service they couldn't answer a semi-technical question as neither of the sufficiently qualified technicians in the country was available. Another example; we bought my in-laws an A3 printer before we left as a thank-you for putting us up for a few weeks (as they have discovered photography since retiring). We picked it up, off the shelf, in a shop in Blandford, Dorset. I want one for myself, but I can't even find one on the shelf in Wellington and that's any A3 printer, not a specific model.

As I said though, no regrets whatsoever. I can deal with the shopping stuff, I think it's superb that the capital city feels so relaxed and accessible (I can see parliament and the Westpac stadium from my desk, which is under 5 minutes from the station yet if I drive in I can park literally 20 feet from the building's door for about £6 all day). A few months ago someone here asked me what I liked about NZ and one of the things I said is that parliament has public toilets under it. I don't think they really understood what I was getting at, but hopefully Brits grasp just how different the feel of the place is compared to the UK where parliament has concrete tank barriers around it.

Anyway, sorry for the OT - I think the thread's question was answered already though.
