Well, Colt 45, stand up and take a bow. Your way worked like a charm!

I must admit I was a bit sceptical, I was expecting to either kill my starter motor or have my breaker bar flailing around, but a quick blast of the starter and job done. thanks.

I did at first try leaving it in gear with the handbrake on but there is to much springiness, presumably from the clutch, and I certainly didn't risk damaging that!

So, hopefully, should find the time to complete the job over the weekend. Of course now I have to find a way to tighten the crankshaft bolt back up....

post an easier and more fail safe way of undoin a crank pully bolt and i will eat my breaker bar ;)

mitsu's are ridiculous tight and no manner of someone holding it in gear with their foot hard on the brake or a 3/4 drive HGV class air gun will shift the bolt either way. wedge a braker bar and its done in seconds. no sweat, no busted knuckles etc. every engine i know of so far rotates clock wise and crank bolts undo anti clock wise so whats easier?

Great until you have an S2 engine sitting on the garage floor & a nice shiny 3/4 drive airgun just gets laughed at! I suspect I'llhave to fabricate a flywheel lock & find the BFO bit of scaffold bar around the garage.
Yup used the starter trick in the past, never generally fails. Worth using some loctite on the bolt when you put it back, if it comes loose it will bu99er the end of the crank

Well, at last, got the job completed!

I eventually found out that the noise I'd been hearing was the balance belt being to tight. Well you live and learn. Actually, it done me a favour, as I wouldn't have looked back under the covers and found the problem with the cambelt otherwise.

Also, found a great way to stop the crankshaft turning so I could do up the crank bolt. Quite simply remove the starter and put a 6mm allen key in one of the clutch bolts and it holds against the side. I can't claim credit for this as I found it from a poster on Clarks Garage message board but it works a treat.

The fan problem turned out to be a loose wire and I haven't done the tracking yet as I found the steering gaiter has split. But otherwise the car's starting to feel pretty good and for the first time since I've owned it, its making the right noises instead rattling, whining and clanking.

Now for the suspension and brakes......

Well done Andy :headbang:

Sounds more advanced than my technical skills stretch to.

Hope it runs well and without problems for a while.

Belts normally whine like mad when first set up, they quieten down after 3-4K or so.
