That's helpful - thanks. Last time I bought a single piston for a Brembo caliper it was £40, so £390 for 16 is a very good price.

If you could find the supplier who made the things then it would be even cheaper!

Tense day today as attempted first start on the 8v engine which is the bored and honed alusil block . After filling with water and oil ,had a small leak from radiator which will have to be replaced which is a pain as this was a replacement already, turned over the engine without fuel to build oil pressure then fired her up first time ! For a minute...
While looking for further oil/water leaks the engine gently cut out on idle after about a minute. Attempt to restart the car and there is a very large metallic crack followed by a horrible metal noise as the engine spun over on the starter briefly. Not feeling very happy at this moment.
Tried a quick spin of the starter with the clutch depressed to rule that out , but still the same, so removed plugs to have a look in bores to check pistons all moving with no broken rods ala the first engine build, again all good. Feeling even worse as the mental image of damaged bores and pistons spring into my mind.
Finally removed starter just in case this was the issue and found the nose of the starter had snapped of with the loose portion causing the rattle against the flywheel when turning the engine over with all the teeth still in perfect condition . I have never been happier to have a broken starter even if it had just been refurbished ! So the car has started and run fine for very short time at the moment.
Quite a strange break which must just be down to metal fatigue on 30 year old aluminium.
Also fitted a splitter I had as my batwing had damage . Not sure on this as there is a lot of flex on the front edge and I am unsure how this will handle air pressure as its also just bolted to the front bumper . I may try and give it more strength with couple more layers of mat or some 9mm ply. Has anyone else used one of these and how was the outcome ?

Tense times! Glad it was an ancillerie failure!

Got a new road car project to get stuck into alongside the 924 build! Need to build up an 8v turbo engine too as I think I will do that as initial build on the 924

Hurrah, car is running to a fashion, (sounds like a tractor due to empty tappets) with the repaired starter and finally left the garage for the first time in six months . At present there are Promax level 3 chips in it which aren't aiding the starting of the car due to change in displacement and turbo so will be swapping these over for some standered chips. Fitted the Vems egt/wideband which shows it is starting rich then leaning out on idle.
What was disappointing was that after fitting longer studs for the 20mm spacers , we put it back on the ground for the first time properly and it is to low after reindexing and that is at the maximum adjustment on the spring plate. So will have to reindex again, but at least everything is greased and free this time.

Shame about the reindexing, but it can be a pain of a job and a bit of trial and error is to be expected first time round.

Love the wheels. Are they 16s?

I have something that may interest you, give me a shout.

Any news on the 16v?

Hi Nick, yes its a pain with the indexing, more so this will be the third time after the cock up with the spring plates ! The wheels are standered 16" teledials with 21mm spacers on the back . As for the 16v , its still with Tom as he is fitting wasted spark to it due to a missing issue with higher revs which he believes is spark related.
I'll give you a call on Monday.
Simon

A bit late now but I reindexed my rear end last year after fitting a refurbed 968 torsion tube and bars. I knocked out the core plugs and had the ends of the torsion bars tapped to take a coach bolt. Reindexing is now a piece of cake. With the tension off the bars (need to remove the stop washer for the spring plate) a few taps on the head of the coach bolt and they are free. Adjust relaxed position to where you want it and slide the bar back in, it's a bit fiddly but when you find the spot they just slide in easily, tap with mallet to seat fully.. Compress the suspension enough to get the stop washer back in and bolt up. No need for anything fancy to stop the bars coming out I just covered them with some rubber caps. Fine adjustment done with the trailing arms done by CoG and it's now mm. perfect. I check them occasionally but they have not moved in 6 months of hard driving. You could always tap the core plugs back in and peen them over or dab a bit of weld on. Pulling the torsion bar tube is not a job I want to do for a long time.

Hi Endoman , I did toy with this idea for the track car , but I had just had the sills replaced and could not bring myself to cut a hole in them to get to the torsion bars like the 911. For this car it shouldn't be to bad as everything is coppersealed and new bolts. Like everything else , the thought is usually worse than the task itself.
I have also got a couple of other projects going on with getting these early 944 strut housing stripped ready for coilover sleeves, then powder coating and also got me the mother of all oil coolers ready for the 16v . A 44 row cooler should just about fit on an angle where the factory cooler goes as I am running manual steering rack so no steering cooler pipes. Had some an10 fittings welded on connector so should be quite simple to connect up. Should keep oil temps under control.

No need to cut a hole in the wings you can get the bars out of engagement in situ, but of course you will need to drop the tube fully for the machining. The bar ends are very hard so I had mine drilled and tapped on a lathe, 12mm coarse to a depth of approx 1". The machinist broke one tap doing it. If the bars are tight in you can make a simple puller with a bit of ali tube, a big flat washer and a hex head set screw or bolt. Even though I calculated the relaxed spring plate position and measured very carefully the ride height was still out on one side and then settled lower than I wanted after a few miles so I was glad to be able to adjust it so easily. There were in and out more times than a fiddler's elbow.

Scott couple of photos of level 3 chips. I still count 24 pins.

Endoman have taken a spare set of torsion bars to be drilled and tapped after seeing your pictures, will give it a go.

Also have a selection of DME chips to try out to enable the engine to be run in before getting another of Tom's ecu . Be interesting to compare.

Superchips probably years old, don't think they offer them for 944's now. Lindsey and Promax very little difference I'd have thought.
