I’m looking for a quick canvassing of opinion … what’s a reasonable value for a very early 944? Specifically a 1982/83 which seems to be in pretty good nick? Not concours, but definitely good?

I’m being offered it in part-ex for my 1987 Lux because the guy has always wanted one in black and fancies updating to an oval-dash. I’m wondering how much to knock off for the exchange.

I paid £1800 for my 1982 Lux last summer. 94K mileage, in black with cloth interior.
Didn't get service history so have had to have belts etc done.

Seems that they can be found for £1200 to £1500 now but it would depend on condition

Sounds reasonable, I think. I keep seeing 83/84/85 models on eBay for under a grand though. I know they’re unlikely to be the best examples, but still …

I’m thinking maybe a thousand pounds plus his old Lux if I agree to part-ex. That way, if I have to spend a little on storing and insuring it for a while then can sell it on at a thousand or more, I shouldn’t be out of pocket.

Anyone think I’m on the right lines, or alternatively think I’m being idiotic?

My 10 pence worth is that an early 944 is not worth much except as a rarity item. Pre-oval dash has some down sides & some up. One of my ex-members had a very early Guards red one & that sold reasonably quickly.

So how do you know it doesn't have some hidden issue that would make it scrap a week after you do the deal. Might work out cheaper keeping your own! (Better the devil you know.) Don't mean to be cynical but I know how much I've spent on mine. If it's only worth 1K by the time youv'e replaced the wheel bearings & fixed a few oil leaks. Fitted the new oil cooler that died the week after you got it. You will have spent 1K already.

Don't see the point in doing the swop personally.

I would either keep your old one or upgrade to a newer model maybe? You never know what hidden issues are on the older px

Aye, you’re all probably right. I’m just tempted by the thought of even half the cash tied up in my Lux getting freed up. It’s a ‘spare’ car that I need to sell one way or the other. I already have my Turbo for keeps.

Think I’ll tell this guy that I’m not interested in the part-ex and he can either pay the full amount for my Lux or not.

The only thing making me think twice is that a lot of people have been put off buying my Lux because of the amount of non-standard elements (tinted windows, tinted lights, 3-piece Speedline alloys, etc), whereas this bloke is really into it. If he part-exchanged his very original early model, it might be comparatively easy for me to sell on afterwards. If I took the part-ex, it would only be in lieu of cash … I’d be selling it on straight away.

That could make it difficult to sell on too. Potential purchasers might wonder why you were selling it straight away!

paid £1250 for mine and spent around £1000 on it already and not touched the outside yet or the Harris tweed seats:lol:
but with the amount of early ones being sold for parts they must be getting a bit thin on the ground now, plus not much money around for quick sales.

Might be worth offering a low price and give him the option of selling it for more private(see how keen he is)
