I've managed getting the trans out and in on my own, but very much easier with another pair of hands. Could be a good time to refresh the trans oil, draining it before removing will make it a couple kgs lighter.

I've got everything out and while waiting for the new bots to arrive its time to clean & paint or replace everything. I have a new gearbox ready which I've rebuilt over the last few months to go on but more importantly the knocking was 100% the clutch plate which is screwed!! I can twist the centre of it right round by hand at which point it knocks on the inner tabs.

Got the clutch change completed and back on the road and can now put the car into 1st\reverse without crunching and no rattle at the biting point! 14 hours or so to complete the work but 2 hours was my fault for a few different reasons. Main lesson I learnt was if the part you're putting back together doesn't simply slide into place somethings not right.

Also yesterday was 5 years to the day since I bought a very sorry looking car with dull paintwork that wouldn't start or idle correctly along with a host of other problems. Five years later and I have a car which makes me smile each time I drive it (and a very understanding wife :lol: )

Finally solved the electrical problems. The battery earth strap. First thing I looked at and thought it was ok. After much frustration and changing the immobiliser, waggled the earth strap and power came back. All that wasted time and money for what was the most common and simplest problem. :oops:

Well worth replacing all the earth straps on the car, cheap to do too as you can make your own

They are all the best part of 30 years old and will be degrading, that's why you get old houses rewired

Started refitting my rear brakes, brake shoes on, also discs, had my calipers powder coated them had to clean rather a lot of it off for them to function correctly. One rear corner on, had hoped to finish today but it's raining !!!

Any suggestions for making your own and which ones to replace? It's a job I'd like to do but would like to know which I need to look at!

Are the only two

Just measure the length and take note of the ends, make sure they are 220amps and your good to go

That fixing it thing is a way of life for a 944.
I'll never see the end of it.

Over the weekend, I decided to cure the con rod on the wiper mechanism problem.
Sourced new short and a long one from https://www.vwheritage.com

But... the right hand side 22mm threaded section had sheared off.
Unlike pre 85 models, wiper mechanisms are hens teeth. Just waiting for Douglas Valley Breakers to get back to me on a replacement as my donor has exactly the same issue. There's one available at Woollies but I don't need the motor.

However, that gave me the chance to clean behind the cowling.
One sized self tapper at the back nearest the right hand wiper aperture.
I painted the sensor bracket, the metal cowling under the block connector as well as the end mesh's. I treated the rust with Bilt Hamber Hydrate 80. It's the mutt's nuts. I also refreshed the nylon washers on the vacuum levers and gave them a small amount of lube.

looking quite peachy.

The next job (on the never ending to do list) will be hatch clams, sunroof arm receptacles, and hatch lever mechanism replacement. Ordered from the US. Hopefully, they are half way across the Atlantic unless hurricane Helena hasn't up ended the ship.

Fuel line clips ordered too for the fuel line replacement job.

Yup it's the wear on the ball rather than the cup on the linkage rod which leads to the premature failure of any new con rod. After a 2nd new rod fell off I drilled through ball and cup and added a split pin. I've had no subsequent issues since and that was about 5 years ago. Funnily enough the wipers only ever failed when it was raining, they were great in the dry!

Luckily the ball on the wiper mechanism from the donor is in much better condition and will be swapped across.
I guess it didn't spend much of it's life in Scotland.
Just got to work out the series of washers above an below the 'L' lever (for want of a better description), Page 374 in the PET catalogue. Not clear.

After the third Center console tray hinge snapped I decided to fit a Club sport one:- At the MoT front arb clamp had snapped new pair from Rose Passion on the way. They do very good prices and service first class (Vive La France)
