Its a last few days post than today but hey, I still did something :)

Getting the car ready for the Spa Classic next week so have been methodically going round all the mechanical bits especially a check up of the rear end rebuild I did last may and thankfully all is well :D :D :D

Even the incredibly expensive rubber blocks that I superglued back on to the rubbers are still well and truly stuck fast!! In fairness, I got the glue at a specialist at the NEC last January and there isn't anything it doesn't stick and hold!

Image

Image

Checked all my callipers that I refurbed the year before and no sign at all of any plate lift or corrosion - my paint job wasn't as good as it might have been but the important bits all function as god intended - cleaned up with a wire brush and off we go :D :D :D

Image

Image

Image

Started on the plugs next.... pulled No1, then No2 and.... what in the name of all that is oil is this :?: :?: :?:

Image

Off cam the cam cover

Image

and we see this courtesy of its last removal a couple of years ago at Lodge in Gorton

Image

A deformed (seemingly at manufacture) spark plug hole sealing ring on No2 cyl but worse - nothing at all sealing No3 cyl and theres just as much oil in there

Image

Image

Image

All cleaned up as best as I could before removing the plugs to fit the new ones. Plugs themselves seemed uniform in colour and were all dry at the electrode with a very light brown covering on the insulation - I seem to recall that's a good sign!

Down side is I broke this connector that sits just behind the dizzy... still connects up again and works but I think I'll need to address this if there's any ideas on how :)

Image

Image

Checked my cam chain and cam sprockets for wear and toothloss - but all is good - no wear on the teeth, none split or broken :D :D :D

Image

Image

Image

Image

Put it all back together after a bit of a clean up on the camp cover and Porsche plate and fired her up :D

There was little bit of oil that dropped into No 2 & No3 cyl....

Image

Sorry this post is a bit longer than anticipated for this one

Well, the 'ol 944S failed its MOT last week on a broken front anti-roll bar drop link. I thought there was a knock coming from somewhere! Anyway, got one from Alastair's remaining Porrec stock on eBay for £15.00. Fitted it yesterday evening and went for the retest today. It passed, no advisories this year...as the MOT tester said 'Happy Days' :D .

Did notice an improvement at the front have to say.... Now I am wondering if the fitting of the more solid poly bushes helped fatigue the drop link itself...there might be a connection? Anyway, the link came with a perfectly serviceable rubber one, so fitted that as I couldn't be bothered to fit the poly one again. They are a real paint to fit.

Some more work has been done on the 924S project as well, I guess I should update that thread at some point. But house and garden stuff has taken up a lot of my time...a theme I have seen on other posts too...but never mind.

Double check the fuel lines that run over the head, both inline and return...I had a bad fuel smell recently but couldn't find where from. My son (mechanic) found it very quickly..he noticed a tiny crack on the return line, when bending the hose you could see it more clearly...no fuel escaping to see by eye but this was most certainly where the smell was coming from. Replaced the hose, smell gone.....another common place is where the hard fuel lines runs over the top of the torsion bar, this is very prone to rust, as are the brake lines with it. If these haven't been changed yet then this would be my first check.

New oil filter and oil, Mobil Super 1000 15W-40...

Image

All double checked and she fired up beautifully and just purred, silky smooth with good pressure

Image

Had some time on my hands last night so played about with some silver and red paint :D

Image

Took her for a valet this afternoon then the hard work started with the mop to get some kind of shine out of the very flat crap paint....

Yes Martin, the NS headlight is way too low and far back in the housing so much so it catches on the wing... Another job to put right when the front PU comes off for the respray this summer at which time I'll replace all the missing rubbers - they're all missing!!

Dropped a clanger today, took my S2 for its first MOT after two years in the garage (new cills, wing bottoms etc etc)
Waited nervously worried about the handbrake as usual.
Sadly it failed, bugger, what's wrong?

Everything perfect except near side number plate light, - doh!

Pop it back tomorrow so they can check new bulb works.

Had coolant changed and power steering fluid leak/hoses sorted :) .

Changed gear box oil (seems to have improved the gear change action a bit), but the old oil looked very old so glad it's done :).

Fitted front fog light protectors and hatch lock micro switch replaced so the hatch now opens with the key :) .

However it's been a case of "a couple of paces forward followed by a quick shuffle backwards" e.g.:-

Whilst removing the washer bottle cap to top up the washer fluid, the threaded part of the bottle which the cap screws into just came away in my hand (looks like it's been glued onto the bottle before)...so that will be a new washer bottle required soon.

Plus the fuel lines over the torsion bar at the back and the earth/ground point for the for fuel pump are looking somewhat corroded ....so they'll need replacing sometime soon as well. :(

Ho hum.

Fixed my non functioning drivers side interior light switch. Took the switch out, gave it a clean and copious amounts of act 50. Bingo.

Also painted the Porsche script red on the cam cover.

Last week I replaced an instrument panel bulb at the back of the dashboard and drove my 968 to Spa yesterday - superb.

today I finished making and fitting the plate over the hole in the pan where the n/s jacking point was once located.
That means both jacking points have now rotted out on my 1988 944.
I didn't bother trying to fabricate a new jacking point, didn't see the point .
Over the weekend I will fire up the mig and do some upside down welding ,always good for the occasional swear word, anger, amusement ,John Cleese type moment.
