Winter wheels will be consigned to the track....

I do suspect my rear drums may be in their last legs so am looking for new ones but they seem to well over £100 for a pair... Any ideas or suggestions on where's best to purchase them? Thanks in advance

Love this car!
Are the rear drums not an Audi / VW part number as well? or, could be time for the rear disk brake upgrade.

Thanks Prophead :D

Yes, I suspect they are but it seems some of the running gear that was used from the VW parts bin came from front wheel drive cars and the rear drums from those don't have the splines... Good shout on checking the Audi parts bin as well :D will have a look :)

Spent yesterday morning at Stuttgart Classica and their cars and coffee morning, the guys were really friendly (coffee and Danish's helped) and happy to show us round the workshop and go through the cars they're working on. Plenty of nice cars turned up and we took a drive by Rennsport on the way home - worse ways to spend a Sunday morning.

Mission Accomplished.... (cam cover refurb)

A previous owner had removed all the paint from the cover - so it would be covered with a light dusting of corrosion if left for more than a few weeks. Now it looks like this.

And the most difficult part of the job - getting the cover back on whilst holding the gasket and plug seals in place.

RTV gasket sealant is what you want - did the same thing at the weekend.

So the end of a very long saga. Ever since I got the car, 10 years ago, there has been something amiss with the alternator drive belt action. Had noticed when going through a large puddle the belt would squeal and pretty much the alternator would not be turning as the voltmeter dropped down to 12v. Then shortly after if would screech a bit as it re-gripped and began charging again. I would also get this phenomenon on start up if it had been raining heavily. Start up car, alternator not charging, few seconds later a little squealing accompanies the charging coming to life, voltmeter climbs to 14 and all is good. Loose or goosed belt you would assume. Wrong. A little while later I start getting what sounds like a bearing whine. Suspect alternator. Change alternator and belt, goes away for a bit. Comes back. Suspect alternator again, what else can it blooming be? Repeat process, repeat outcome. Car's had about 5 alternators now! Move on to next suspect, replace AC compressor, needed one with an intact nose seal anyway so changed it, changed belt, all good for a bit. Symptoms return. Much head scratching. Take it apart again and notice alternator drive belt has slithers of metal inside the grooves. I know I've changed alternators and AC compressors so only remaining suspect is the crank pulley itself. Boom. Only took about 8 years to figure this out! Enquire about cost of new crank pulley from OPC, £102 inc discount. Ouch, so whilst I swither about this I throw on a new belt, with no metal inside, and over tighten the belt to help the disintegrating crank pulley grip better, kinda forgot about it as was mostly performing ok with belt tight. Then we get an unexpected gas evacuation from AC system. Not put 2 and 2 together at this point, AC system was reconditioned and many parts replaced, but not all parts. Its 29 years old so highly likely something I've not replaced has sprung a leak. Forget it and move on. Then I start to hear a bit of what sounds like bearing rumbling on start up and idle. Defo coming from alternator belt area, clears when revved and heated up. Now put 2 and 2 together and assume tight belt has damaged AC compressor bearing, in turn damaged nose seal, and explains gas loss. Time to order that crank pulley! Decide to acquire a re-con alternator at same time, as had likely damaged that bearing also and had no desire to complete the job and realise I needed to do it again! All bases now covered.

Fitted the crank pulley, tighten to a million torques, fit re-con alternator and AC compressor and finish job with 2 new belts. Tighten to recommended level, good idea that (!), all noises gone! Phew. Also did an oil change and changed the o-ring on the low end of the trans oil cooler loop which had a small sweat. Topped up gearbox oil then popped off to my mates house to get the AC system pressure tested (ok), vacced and re-filled with gas. All good now but would have been considerably less expensive had I changed the crank pulley sooner! Anyway I have icy cold air again in time for this heat wave people are talking about...............

Today’s mission was to finally get the track rod ends off. I should have done it on Monday when I had the day off but as that was the wife’s birthday, I decided that discretion was the better part of valour and spent the day with her instead.
Today however, the bloody TRE’ s were going to come off! They had defeated me once before but today, I had a plan and partners in crime- Mr B.lowtorch and Mr Angle grinder. In preparation, I had repeatedly applied plus gas penetrating fluid which to be fair, I have always had great results with. However, with the TRE’s, I was getting nada, zip not even a hint of movement even some heat at the last attempt had resulted in nothing other than a smoked out garage from said Plus gas
I gave it one more try before proceeding with the plan- nope, failure :(
Mr B.lowtorch was brought forth and the drivers side was given a thorough roasting and I tried again- nope, failure
Right! That’s it! I’m going to give you a damn good thrashing!! Out with a guest appearance by Mr Angle grinder and a slitting disc. The ball end was duly severerd(oo’er missus!) and a slit cut along the length of the remaining sub avoiding the the locking nut. I also made sure to slit down across the newly severed end. The instrument of terminal persuasion was then applied (BFO nut splitter) to the freshly cut slit. Having got to the point where I couldn’t apply any more force to the splitter, it was removed and plenty of plus gas applied followed by Mr B.lowtorch doing his thing until the remainder of the TRE was almost glowing.
I gave it another go.........

Crack!!!!!

It turns

Feck! Bloody gone & done it :bounce:
Wound the remainder off & lobbed it outside to cool off (actually it was so I didn’t sit on it and brand myself).
Moved all the gear to the other side and repeated the process- all done 10 mins later :D :D

Buoyed by this success, I had a go at the rear mount on the front suspension arms and managed to get everything nice & loose ready for the replacements when they turn up.

Car nil, me 4.

Ice cream man turned up at this point so a celebratory ‘99’ with flake was had.

ARB was eyed up afterwards...........tomorrow is his date with destiny :D

Today, it was the turn of the front ARB to receive some attention. As usual, I had applied plus gas to the various nuts & bolts in preparation.
However, the first order of business was to get the car higher so I could get underneath it properly to remove the batwing and plastic guard.
I had recently purchased a Sealey Viking model jack which had a much greater lift than my Halfrauds 2 tonne jobbie and this was put to use for the first time. Now its not new per se, just new to me and at one point was standard issue to RAC patrolmen. I feel sorry for any of them having to lift this bugger in & out if the van as I’m not sure if the 2 tonne rating applies to its lifting capacity or its weight - it sure is bloody heavy!
Anyway, back to the job in hand. Having lifted the car and finally been able to get it on the equally heavy duty axle stands (the aforementioned Halfrauds jack did t have the lift height), the plastic bits were removed without any dramas and so was the ARB. Bit of an anti climax really as I was expecting a right battle as with everything else but it was a doddle.
ARB had some minor corrosion that was addressed with the flap wheel as was the lifting coating. I think this will probably end up getting powder coated in due course. In the meantime, I have made a note of the rubber bushing part numbers and will order these tomorrow which will also give me an opportunity to chase up the parts that have been on order with my OPC for around 5 or so weeks now and I’m getting to the point that I can’t put any of the refurbed parts back on or tighter again without them

Could well be, though my 2 gear lever rubber bushes were a bit soft causing some movement. Wrapping insulating tape around the bushes cured it.

the plastic bit is not available separately, you have to buy the while thing from Porsche

Called an intermediate shift lever 944 424 013 02 @ £153.00

Richard at WPO in Germany sells a repair kit for about £40,

He has changed his trading name to

I had some tube with the right ID to slip over the shaft, I drilled out the plastic bit to the OD of the tube and pressed it in. It would cost pence to do.
