Related subject....the first switch (closest to driver) is the auto door lock, mine only toggles down, not up, just oneway, is that by design or is the switch bad? It seems to lock the doors, but will not unlock.

Thanks

In my car you just press the switch again and it unlocks the doors.

To be more correct I think you need to press the forward end of the switch after you have locked the doors and then press the rearward end again and they unlock.

My mate discovered this at the weekend when we were driving to Donington Park - he asked me what the switch did. I told him it locked the doors and I pressed it to lock the doors. Then I told him I had no idea how to unlock them and he showed me how to do it.

Thank you, I will try that...but your switch only toggles oneway....down? Mine will not move when I try to push top of the switch...only down....

I am taking my car for an MOT this afternoon. I will try to resolve this. It definitely worked to lock and unlock on Sunday morning!

Ok my car passed the MOT with flying colours and no advisories.

The switch on the centre of the dashboard in my car works as follows:
When the doors are shut and unlocked and the ignition is on you press the rearward portion of the switch, the locks clunk, the buttons in the doors go down and a red light comes on in the forward area of the switch.

To unlock the locked doors the ignition needs to be on you press the rearward end of the switch, the red light in the switch goes out, the locks clunk and the door buttons come up.

Thats it - on my car.

I will check mine out tomorrow

See if it works like yours, I seem to remember having to pull the door handles to get the locks open last time I tested it

This is confusing me. Are you discussing the "blank" button or the central door locking button with the key symbol on it?

For what its worth:

Blank button - seems to vary by model. On my car it is furthest left. It used to toggle ultrasonics for the factory alarm. This button toggles or rocks like the electric mirror select button.

Key button - middle of console buttons. Fires central locking on/off when ignition on. The little key symbol illuminates when the lights are on, the only button in the console that illuminates. A red circle illuminates top of button when doors locked. The button does not toggle, it operates be pressing the bottom of the switch. Open/close/open/close. lol

Thanks for the reply....it is helpful...my lock button only toggles oneway...good to confirm that is correct. I have no light on the switch....and it locks but does not unlock....I am hoping a new switch will correct...

Thanks for the help.

Stuart,

We were talking about the lock/unlock button which works exactly as you described. It would appear that it does not work as designed on some cars for whatever reason.

Ok, glad we cleared that up!

The central locking in a 944 is quite complicated considering it essentially only controls 2 doors. I'd be surprised if it is the switch, as working one way suggests the switch is ok as it only has one trigger. Years of doors opening and closing doors has most likely caused a wiring issue somewhere. Hope you get it fixed.
