All

Had some power issues as of late. After carrying out several tests it looks like the battery needs changing. Alternator seems to be sending power ok but even after a long run the battery doesnt give enough to crank upon next start up.

Done some shopping round and the Bosche S5 with a 750 cca seems to be the most powerful out there. Anybody got any other recommendations on batteries or know of any higher powered models?

Current battery model is an after market make and only 650 cca so I should notice an improvement.

Also what should the battery output be on average on the dash meter? Seems to always be quite low and doesn't move when reving. Is this normal.

Thanks as always

Chris

Had this car 5 years and battery was 7+ years old and was ok earlier last year as it had been kept on Carcoon Battery conditioner when not in use. 5 months away when it was up for sale did it in so I had to get a new one :-

Bosch S4-008 was the recommended one for 1990MY 944 Turbo
http://www.boschbatteries.com/car/s4008 ... -16-1-.php (1st link I found on a Google Search!)

(Had 3 944's over the last 7-1/2 years & this was the 1st problem I've had with a battery. I recon the last battery would have been ok if it had been kept on trickle)

12v 63Ah is the spec in the combined 944 S2 & 944 Turbo Drivers Manual (no mention of CCA)
The S4-008 is rated 12V 74 Ah & 680CCA. The S2 does take more power to turn over than the Turbo (10.9:1 vs 8:1 compression ratio + its a bigger lump :)

Would recommend keeping battery on a Carcoon charger/conditioner if the car is not being used regularly

I replaced some inadequate little no-brand thing in my S2 with a Bosch S5 007 during the summer. Spins the old lump up much better and I have no complaints at all. When the car had reference sensor tantrums and wouldn't start I was amazed by how many "cranks" the Bosch had in it.

reminds me I need a new battery . Its been able to start on the 2nd or 3rd turn but doubt it would crank much more .

It might be worth putting a jump lead from the negative battery terminal direct to an earth point on the engine and see if it cranks better. You may have less than perfect earths

Hi folks - I replaced my ailing S2 battery with a 'standard type' a couple of years back. However, whilst sorting a clutch hydraulic leak, which meant a rebuild of both the slave & master cylinders, the starting motor had to be removed to do the job. While the starter was removed, I got the garage to check it out - well just as well, as it was very much in need of attention! Since the starter rebuild the motor cranks & starts pretty quick than before (the early model 944's seem to spin-start a lock quicker, by the nature of their engines). I also always depress the clutch prior to starting...

Its a Bosch S5 for me - absolutely brilliant :D

Type 100 iirc - do check measurements as the S5 comes in lots of different sizes!

Phew, I went for an Exide Premium 100 - same size, based on the owner's manual and Euro Car Part's own car database.

on this topic..

Has anyone replaced the battery cable on later cars with a boot mounted battery? Mine looks quite corroded and its something I'd like to do.
I've seen a few on ebay but not sure how many amps to go for?

Would any of these be sufficient?

I would just like to say, politely, to all S2 owners: Get your starter motors re-furbished! Any decent battery will turn-over the engine but as I have posted before, a tired starter wont! Mine grumbled even with a new battery - rebuilt starter fixed it all sorted!!!
