Good luck with tracing this, Endoman... As Martin points out, the info on air and temp comes from different sensors and I suspect it's similar on the 944S2 as it is on the 968. I wonder if there's a coolant flow issue to/ through the heater matrix if the max temp gives you heat for a short time...

I took the 968 to work today and she was a dream :D idled perfectly and drove silky smooth :D :D I'm so happy to be back behind the wheel again 8)

Still no joy with heater appears to be IC4 on PCB which controls mixer flap and heater valve solenoid. Found a cheap controller and guess what that has IC4 burnt out.
The the window regulator failed glass stuck at bottom of door. I had fitted a cheap replacement which lasted about 1 year.
I had a new regulator but the motor was seized on my old arm which I still had. Took the cover plate off. freed it off, cleaned and lubricated and got it working again. I was a siezed sintered bearing at the end of the pinion which will probably fail again but for now a cheap fix to get me through winter with a dodgy heater.

Ive had the flap motors off and they respond to 12v input correctly. Solenoids a bit tricky to get at I'll have to take the drivers seat out and lie on the floor. As far as I can work out the defrost button bypasses the IC4 controller and temp potentiometer (which I've tested and is ok). Found another CCU so will try that next.

I feel for you there fighting through electrical gremlins.... I'm afraid your testing and progress is far beyond my knowledge to help on your plight... sorry :( best of luck with the replacement CCU...

I've had another bout of DME and electrical issues on the 968 necessitating a removal of the passenger footwell electrics and tidying up some seriously dodgy soldering - this is an example of the butchery under the fuse box

After everything was refitted, carpets and all, I reconnected the battery and what you adam and eve it - that damned DME relay started buzzing again :twisted:

I feel "time served" at this now, so unscrewed the top of the fuse box, lifted up the right hand side slightly, buzzing stopped... put it all back down again, fuse box lid on and fired her up - perfect!

After all the work on the electrics, we took the 968 and Boxster out for a run with the Tipec lot in Cheshire & Staffs yesterday - weather as perfect! My mate took the 968 and we took the Boxster.... both got suitably filthy :lol: a few pics of the day :)

That is really bad luck. I recall that another contributor had a similar experience when he had the head gasket changed and one of the bolts inside the cam tower (The ones under the removable covers in the cam tower) was left loose. The bolt apparently came undone and was catapulted by the camshaft out through the cam tower housing. There are quite a few bolts in there so it would be very easy to miss one in the assembly process and it is also very easy to drop one inside during assembly.

As Blackadder says, you might want to speak to the vendor to see if any work has recently been done to the top of the engine and what assistance they can now provide to you.

They are great cars and very reliable when properly maintained so do persevere.

Finally managed to find some time today to take the head off today to investigate why the engine died. I'm a Porsche Specialist by trade, I mainly deal with mid and rear, water cooled, engines.
Well, it looks like a recent previous repair (prior to my ownership) was done very badly, and I do mean VERY badly. The cambelt had shredded its teeth because a bolt had been left loose inside the rocker cover and jammed the cam up thus breaking the belt. The result is one bent valve.
The reason I say it had such a bad job is because 90% of the bolts, nuts and washers were put in in their incorrect holes, all different lengths, standard flat washers used where they shouldn't have been, etc, etc. Some bolts were even too long for the hole they were in and were only tight because they had bottomed out and actually weren't doing the job they were supposed to do. I can honestly say that I'm astounded that so called mechanics actually think its acceptable to carry out such shoddy work.
Luckily I managed to source a replacement engine that looks original so I'll give that a once over and drop that in instead.

Sorry to hear this. I'm not sure of the situation with your car but I think with so many of these cars now being maintained by their owners it is more important than ever to assess the vendor as much as the car. I've seen a few people that I wouldn't trust to find their own elbows let alone wield a spanner.

I hope the new engine proves to be a bit better than the old one.

Many years ago my father had a local "mechanic" start a rebuild on his Austin 3 Liter engine. Problem was crank wouldn't turn even before rods were attached. To my horror I found all the main bearing caps mixed up. A mate took his Alfa to a new local garage for a belt change, wrong belt fitted all valves bent, they were Italian waiters not mechanics, glad they didn't set up as dentists.

Whilst there's definitely some wire under the fuse box at fault that causes this intermittent issue with the DME buzzing, it hasn't reared its head since....

Went for a run up to Bolton OPC on Friday to collect my new hold-all

Saw Wallys Jeans in bare shell fresh from the paint shop.... atop a vast array of brand new parts including gearbox and engine... I'd be as giddy as anything if that lot arrived in the post :lol:

Projector mod getting nearer. Both headlights finished, wiring in. Next stage is alignmement and sealing. A lot of trial and error, planning, measuring and adjustment of fit. Half of it done in the dark and cold. So far looks promising.
The relay mod was first mod I did which did improve things a lot. Then leds which are brighter but too much scatter and very poor cut off. These projector Hids have a really good cut off and foreground illumination. High beam not tested as yet and the warm up is a bit slow.

Well the projectors are in and working, performance is excellent. Still have some clearance problems and need to tidy wiring and seals. Cutting the bar has caused a bit of distortion on the n/s so my shut lines are out. Not an easy job by any means .
