I'd be interested to see how you get on with the dash. I'm going to have to reconsider my expediture plans as I have a small leak from the radiator top hose that I thought was from a bad hose cilp....it's not, it's from the radiator  I'll have a look at having it repaired by Sussex radiators who are just down the road from me!

More worrying is a noise I have not heard before from the rear of the car at idle when cold. It's a rattle that goes away when I dip the clutch pedal. Also when I release the clutch pedal it clunks quite loadly - again from the back end.

The rattle is only there when cold - goes away when things warm up...I'm thinking Torque tube / clutch / gearbox / bloody expensive! we will see how things progress but a trip to JMG seems on the cards.

Jon

The dash will be a next month jan thing I expect but shall see how things go on. Ill keep you psoted.

The jingle you hear sounds like toque tube bearings and I wouldnt wory.

How recent have you noticed?

The weather is now colder, which means you idle will be slower (as Jon Mitchel says) you might need a new temp sender. But the slower idle will cause things to vibrate which otherwise wouldnt have. Once its warmed up the idle speed rises and you have no noise!

I speak from experience, I had this jingle in the summer as my engine wasnt very well set up. It would idle very slowly and sound like a bag of spanners in a washing machine. After the engine set up work I had done its spot on and Ive driven very hard over a few thousand miles and nothings fallen of yet!

Nothing like a tanget eh :D

I have been trying to track down a rattle from underneath for some time, however that seems suspension compression related rather than this new noise. the car has stood for a couple of weeks so I pulled her out of the garage and run the engine to operating temperature...that's how I spotted the coolant leak.

The rattle is definately fron the back of the car...sounds as if it is at the gearbox from within the car. Idle is indeed a little lumpy - I've bought new dizzy, rotor, leads, plugs, idle air valve, engine mounts, vacuum tube set...but not a temp sender. I'd replaced that when I first bought the car seven years ago...so a new one will be bought....I may as well go for the full works.

Hoping to get all this done, plus the drop links and the belts ready for next week...oh and sort out the hrw and leak into the rear hatch!

regards

Jon

If the idle is low or lumpy, it could be the exhaust, 5th gear idler, or torque tube which is rattling around, possibly some attention to the idle issue will cure the rattle, as I think James has already said in a previous post :)

Thanks Jon, I'm using a slegehammer/wallnut approach by changing everything / anything...failing that the car will arrive at a garage near you....with a gallon of petrol and matches supplied. Ever since I decided not to buy the S on EBAY, this car has thrown a hissy fit :(

Thats very unusual. May cars tend to play up when I put them up for sale and line up a replacement.

As soon as the replacement car falls through my cars start working again!
