Hi All,

Just brought myself a 1983 944, for not very much money. So it's not in great condition. The paints all over the place, it has an oil and exhaust leak, the tyres are about 12 years old, the disks and pads have seen better days, the battery tray has a hole and the battery needs securing, the wipers only work on one setting and don't park, the screen washers don't, the boot seal leaks a bit, the drivers window doesn't move and neither do the electric mirrors. Oh, and I think the steering column bearing needs changing.

I like it though. I have the carpet out as it was a bit wet. Well actually it had a bit of grass growing on it!

Drove it 280 miles home and it was fine, very comfortable.

Here's a photo.

Looking forward to getting it into a good mechanical condition via a bit of tinkering and using this forum to learn a bit more about it. So hi to all.

Well, can't say it's the warmest welcome - perhaps a bump will help

welcome to the forum from the NW of England...we're a friendly lot up north :)

Sounds like you've a bit of work ahead, but stick with it the 944 is a fun car!

Welcome!

That's certainly not the stuff they put in the advert :)

Sounds like its a fun project to work on though!

There's loads of help, advice and experience on here and at the TIPEC meetings and events.

Good luck!

Thanks for all the hellos. I try to get along to meeting. This weekends jobs are to get the car running right again as it seems to have developed an inability to idle, then fix up the windows, mirrors and screen washers plus put the carpet back it. I'm currently putting the oil leaks and exhaust to the back of my mind!

A belayed welcome!
If the tyres are 12 years old goodness knows when the belts were last changed
Get them done ASAP otherwise it may well end in tears

I know - it's a bit like driving a time bomb. I'm absolutely sure when someone goes to change them there will be a need to do all the seals whilst in there and that will cost (I've had a quote and its more than I paid for the car). When I consider that a second hand engine from a broken car costs less than the belt change it makes me a bit more 'relaxed' about the whole thing. I'm learning the art of driving with my fingers crossed (and keeping my RAC card close at hand). :D
