Hi there,

Can anyone suggest a suitable replacement headunit for my 964's after-market and failing Pioneer unit, that will be "sympathetic" to the car's age? I do not want a Ministry-Of-Sound type stereo with flashing lights and graphic equalisers - I need something that will be suitable for a car that was built in 1990.

Any suggestions (and indication of pricing, if you have it) would be appreciated.

seg

What's the price range and what features do you need ?

Here's a couple of plain looking stereos from caraudiosecurity.com (i've used these guys for the last 5 stereos i've fitted)

I would guess you'll need minimum CD/MP3
You can pick these up from around £60

BLAUPUNKT-ESSEN-MP36 £79

Next up is CD/MP3 and USB slot (8GB USB flash drive only £16 from Ebuyer.com - that's a lot of music)
Head Units from £65

KENWOOD-KDC-W4537UA £76 or £125 with Bluetooth hands free kit

Becker make some fantastic head units that are sympathetic to older car/dash styles but contain up-to-date technology.

I use a Becker Grand Prix, as shown above (they tend to run at around £350 new), with the optional iPod connection kit (that runs at around another hundred). Other models include things like satnav built in to the head unit, still without looking particularly ‘bling’.

Chaps, these are very good suggestions - thanks a lot.
Jason, do you do the fitting yourself? Any wisdom you might want to pass on? I am thinking in terms of incompatible harnesses, having to cut the wires off the harness and re-attach them etc.

Blaupunkt looks good value.

Didn't they leave the factory fitted with blue spot?

You won't know what's on the back of your old unit until you take it out.

Some have a harness, some haven't
Just depends on how it was fitted (usually poorly - just replaced the Alpine in my 993, think it was fitted by a 5 year old)

Yes I do fit my own
Have probably fitted over 20 into various cars over the years

If you need any help or advice give me a call
I've PM'd my number

Probably did

I think the Blaupunkt would suit the 964 dash

If the speakers are anything to go by then Porsche used to fit Blaupunkt as I have just replaced all my speakers myself with a little help from a friend. That Becker unit looks good.

The Blaupunkt Essen is very nice - but just read the spec and the radio only receives FM!! That's a bit of a bummer, as when everything else fails, you should be able to switch to Radio4 Long Wave to listen to the Archers  ... not to mention the shipping forecast.

Don't think anyone makes head units without AM

If you look in the Tech spec it has AM-noise suppression > 30 dB

That's what I thought as well - but went through the instruction manual and the specs and guess what:

- PITA or what? :(

Blaupunkt is Blue Spot in German, part of Bosche AFAIK.

I'm expecting to finally receive my new Becker tomorrow, Stathis, so you can have my old Becker if you like. It's badged Porsche so should fit sympathetically in the car
