Hi!

I'm restoring an 85 944 and have spent the best part of the day troubleshooting the sunroof and have been having some strange issues.

Currently it will move into the 'Unlocked' position from 'Locked' with key in ignition and it will also move to the 'Down' position if i wind it 'Up' manually with key turned in the ignition.
Earlier today I had it intermittently moving 'up' and 'down', and at one point if i switched the directional relays around it would go up, then i could switch around to go down so I assumed it was one of the directional relays.

Today I have:
1. Fixed the drive dog which had snapped.
2. Removed and checked the operation of both Limit switches which are normal.
3. Checked the voltages of the console switch which are normal.
4. Checked both directional relays which were ok, but replaced one anyway due to the nature of the problem only affecting one direction.
5. Checked voltages to the directional relay connector block which were fine.
5. Removed fuse 9 and cleaned contacts.

Everything seems to be in order except it will only either release the catches, or lower the roof from raised. Raising the roof or engaging the catches to locked position from unlocked is a no now, no matter what i try.

Any thoughts or pointers on something i may have missed would be really helpful as i have run out of ideas. Most of my ideas were from the clarks garage guide:

Thanks.
Nick

I'll second that. It lives under a little plastic cover and is activated by the metal tab at the front of the sunroof. Remove the plastic cover and bend the microswitch tab down a bit.

Thanks both!
Checking that switch out tomorrow. Hopefully that will be the fix i've been looking for!

Interested to hear if it was the centre micro-switch ?

I haven't quite got there as was pre-occupied with trying to diagnose why the engine won't start after new fuel pump, filter, fuel lines etc (all of which needed doing)...

Turns out a touch of water made it's way into the ecu so the injectors weren't firing:

Also decided to whip a few bits off the front end for refurbishing:

Back on to the sunroof later in the week!

I had some time this weekend to do some fault finding. The sunvisor microswitch was faulty, but cleaning with contact cleaner and lots of clicking helped. I still have a problem though.

It raises and lowers perfectly now.
The pins unlock the roof to remove it, however they will not return back to the locked position.

I have tested, replaced and switched around the directional relays.
I have tested the centre console switch, and am getting 12v to correct pins and when rocking the switch back and forth am getting the correct 12v to each pin correctly.
Sunvisor micro switch is working perfectly
I have tested and switch around both limit switches to rule out completely limit switch 2 being the cause

I am at a bit of a loss. Perhaps the loom between the switch and the directional relay socket?

This is from Clarks:

Lifting arms retract to the "released" position for removal but will not raise to the "locked" position.
Sunroof Console Switch
Mirco-Switch between Sun Visors
Limit Switch 2
Directional Relay 1

Any ideas would be very helpful.
