Post subject:  Door speaker subs replaced

Thought I would post a few pics of the new speakers & solution for replacing the rubbish door subs in my 986. I had already removed the original head unit (running a Sony mechless head unit with speakers powered direct from this as fronts + rears), amplifier & replaced the dash speakers with Alpine SPG 10C2s as I was really dissapointed with the poor sound from original set up.. Being all OCD I went for Alpine SPG 17C2s (6.5") for the doors to match my dash speakers. The original subs are 13cm/5" monted in a plastic box mounted in the bottom of the door so it took a bit of thought to come up with a solution. Found a couple of threads where the enclosure had been cut open & speakers mounted into MDF which was bonded to said enclosure. I didnt like the bonded part so used the black outer ring thats held on by 6 screws as a template & spacer for my MDF sheet. Lots of fitting, removing, refitting, measuring & cutting later I ended up with a good solid (for solid read last forever as I over engineer anything I do lol) mount for the speaker pretty impressive when you consider its a 17cm speaker squeezed into a 13cm space. Really happy with the result & well worth the effort with sounds improved massivley.

So first look was hmm this isn't goint to fit might be sending them back for 13cm ones!!

Nothing a dremel can't sort out & commited at this stage!!

Lots of measuring, fitting, refitting, more fitting, more measuring & cutting later everything ready to be fitted with the oblong 6 holed plastic bit going on first then the mdf followed by speaker (enclosure has to go into door first as mdf holds some of the door membrane in place. Original sub is on the right to show size difference.

All back in using original mountings, wiring & no clearance issues (before anyone asks I did tighten the loose screws up!).

Hi Chris

Looks good, do you think this would be a similar job on a 987? Did you have any trouble getting the door cards back on, are the original grills big enough for the new speakers?

Have you got a photo of the door card back on?

Cheers

Ian

Hi pic of my door panel below with new speakers in. I havent had to alter anything on the panel to make it fit & have used existing mounts, screws etc. Door cards go on/off really easy once you know where the plactic clips are. I had them on/off 5 or 6 time's checking measurements ets. The way I have cut the original plastic sub enclosures means that the speakers only protrude approx 10mm more than 13cm ones I replaced (had a look with my inspection camera with panel on & theres still clearance left even with that 10mm extra).

Your 987 has a different set up so whilst nothings impossible it wil require some dismantling, thinking & measuring to work out a way forward. My 986 was set up with a tweeter & midrange in the top of dash then subs in doors. Your 987 looks to have subs & mids in the doors so you should be able to replace relativly easy with no mods using a set of seperates (mid range speaker with crossovers & seperate tweeter I think. It also depends on your sound package i.e where the amp is sending low or high frequencies too......

In summary yes you can replace them but its a bit of a how long is a piece of string question LOL

Feel free to ask any more questions :-)

Just found this if its any help as explains your set up very well
