I've just managed to do the shortest journey since owning the the 987 Boxster, about 300 metres. Then there was a loud clatter from the FOS. I recovered the top 150mm of the O/S coil spring from the road, turned around and put the car back in its garage! Looking on the bright side, i was on a straight bit of road doing about 20mph, the break was clean and it didn't take anything else with it. Just waiting for the quote to replace both front springs and a date to do the job! :(

Stuart, you were lucky on the OPC Open day last year one Boxster was found to have all 4 coil springs broken!

I was surprised to have a spring failure. I know the car is ten years old now, but the mileage is only 46k. It's going in later today (so that I don't miss the weekend sun!), and both front springs will be done. It's probably something I'd have had a go at myself a few years ago. The quoted time is 3.5 hours, plus the original 0.35 to investigate the fault. Add the springs and it's coming out at £420 for the whole job.
In view of your reply Jim, I am contemplating getting the rear ones done in the future as a precaution. I wouldn't fancy having them go when pressing on a bit. The alloy wheel refurbishment I'd planned may get put back until next winter.
I know that after a few miles of sun and fun with the roof down, I'll soon forget the expense!

A similar escape for a 968 (not mine) last year at Goodwood I think... A fellow member took a look under the bonnet to see frayed cam belt sticking out of the little inspection hole at the top of the cover... Came to be known as Micks Lucky Escape...

Good luck with the new springs, sounds like a relatively simple fix :)

Just to wind this thread up. I was a little out with cost, the final bill worked out at £755. The top mounts needed cutting off and replacement with new ones. Fortunately the PASM shocks were fine, (cost per item being £375ish plus VAT). OPC were a little slow with delivery of the parts to my preferred local garage, but the Boxster is not needed on a daily basis, so no big deal, I just missed a couple of sunny days!
The car felt tight before the spring broke, but it feels better now. I can feel the difference.

Happened to my wife's 986 in the drive, literally moved it 4-6 inches and heard a "donk" so got out and found 4 inches of spring on the floor. Did the job myself so just the cost of the springs, there is just enough room that you don't have to take the whole strut off, just undo the top while fully jacked up and pop the top of the strut from under the wing. Use spring compressors that wind downwards if that makes any sense, it's tight!! but doable.
