SCENE 2
At home, bright sunny day:

W. "Hey Sar, let's drive up to Stoke Bruerne and meet Gill & John [friends] for a booze up!!!".

S. "Is that wise - you know what happened the last time we did that - we broke down, so maybe not [chortle, chortle]"

W. "Naar, don't be daft - got that out o' the way, won't happen again babe - come on, 'urry up!"

Cut to:
Sitting on a roundabout with hazards hazardly flashing, battery warning light shouting "Idiot!!!" at me and oil level showing a ...... well yeah ....... a loss.

W. "Wot?!? Again?!?! Wot!?!

S. "Yep, again!"

SCENE 1
Approaching a roundabout, slow speed, top down - sound of slight crunch as if running over something. Steering suddenly feels like lead, very heavy lead. Pulls over - engine still running. Not in a great place (lorries kissing my paintwork) - tries to start engine to reverse to slightly better spot - horrible noise, KEY OFF!!!!!!! 2 flatbeds later at home - pondering the latest Porsche disaster:

Eeeeerrrr, no ................................ this is where you lot come in!!

WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Clearly that's what needs to be done - can't see any alternative :(

Could just be the auxiliary/serpentine belt failed or one of the pulleys. Do you know for certain if oil has been lost?

Hope it's something relatively simple anyway, hard luck mate.

Well whilst parked up for 15 mins or so I just checked the (electronic) level and it showed 1/3rd full as opposed to it's usual 'full' - it ain't never been that low before and was 'full' yesterday. I'll check the belt / pulleys tomozza but likely it's flat bedding to Ray's on Monday (to catch the last 3 weeks of the warranty - I hope).

No Steve lol, I'd already stopped and turned off but then decided to move back a bit cos of heavy traffic so re-started - well, I tried but it sounded horrid so I shut straight off again. The steering, when being pushed back into my driveway by RAC man was unbelievably heavy - would barely move.

Anyway, she's outside being severely pissed on - will go on check belt etc. when it improves.

Cheers

To clarify;

1) Approached roundabout in traffic at slow speed
2) 10 yards before roundabout (15mph) slight crunch sound (from underneath?)
3) Steering suddenly extremely heavy going round roundabout
4) Pulled in to side of roundabout, engine still running and sounding normal
5) Shut engine off
6) Called RAC
7) Needed to move back a bit (traffic v.close)
8 ) Tried to re-start to reverse but sounded odd so shut down and stayed put
9) 15 mins later turned key to position 1 to check oil level - was considerably lower than normal - battery warning light is on
10) When turning to position 1 heater fan etc. came on as normal
11) Hazards are on but on the dash the flashing green lights kept cutting in and out

Did not attempt to re-start

I wonder if the low oil is just a mis read due to electrics failing due to a low battery (no belt all be it for a very short period means no power being put back into battery........). Have you checked the levels on the dipstick & did your RAC man come up with any theories?

Lets hope its an easy fix & I had change belts on my list of things to do (my 986 is just coming up to 94000 miles) it might now be at the top of said list!!

Cheers bud. My car has no dipstick and the RAC man wouldn't touch it - I asked him not to anyway.

I know it's not a Porsche and I don't know what the set up is for auxiliary belts on the Boxster, but I had a pulley disintegrate causing aux. belts to snap/tangle on a bmw 320D. Nasty noise when it occurred, loss of power steering, alternator charging and water pump but of course engine keeps running. Not hugely expensive to sort, engine covers removed, new pulley and belts fitted.

Hope it's as simple as that Wayne!

There's one belt I believe & sits at the front? of the engine so access is via a panel behind the seats.

Pelican Parts do a good write up here.....[http://www.101projects.com/Boxster/Projects/005/page1.htm]

That lower left pulley is (was) the water pump. Looks like the pulley has fallen off, has the pump seized? The alternator won't charge so the battery volts will drop & this will give weird warning lights. Also the PAS is driven from here so no power steering!
