Hi, I am taking my Boxster to Germany and Austria in August, - (Nurburgring, Porsche Museum Stuttgart) and am looking at going up the "Grossglockner" and was wondering if anyone else had been there and could pass any comment / advice. I know there is the Stelvio but apparently the Grossglockner is more scenic and have to consider the patient other half.
any advice gratefully received. :)

When are you going? I was here 12 months ago and can't remember if it was closed or not? I'll check my route and see which passes I took, but I remember Stelvio was closed. :D

Hi, We will be there end of August. At the "ring" for the DTM, then doing a couple of laps day after. Making way down Germany then on to Salzburg. Looking at making way to Nancy and then on to Rheims. (Unless someone can suggest better than France).

I've done both - but not in a Porsche. I did the Glockner in 2010 on the Ramshackle Rally to Krakow in Poland (which my team won). The 3 of us were in a 1 litre Nissan Micra that was held together with duck tape and very down on power. We did manage to get to the very top and have our picture done at the sign (it was one of the Top Gear style challenges we had to do along the route). It is spectalular up there and I recommend it over the Stelvio.

I did the Stelvio on the 2012 Ramshackle Rally to Split in Croatia. Our aim was to go all the way over the pass and into Bormio but it was blocked by an avalanche and we had to turn back at the half way point. The road up is very narrow (unlike the Glockner) and it's not as scenic.

I'd say do the Glockner which is also more likely to be open in the summer months.

Hi...we did a road trip that took in the Grossglockner and it was so good I wanted to turn round and go again - but we didn't have the time

While you are in that neck of the woods it is cool to drive in to Gmund

Also a visit to Helmut Pfeifher’s Auto Museum is just a treat

Hope you enjoy it

Hi All,
many thanks for replies. Looks like it's the Grossglockner and not stelvio then. Wife will be pleased. Thanks for ideas, will post some pictures when back.

Well, trip completed. Must say the Boxster never missed a beat all the 3165 miles completed.
Went firstly to Nurburgring, watched the practice and qualifying for Porsche Carrera Cup (German) and the DTM. Really good day and then on to Koblenz for Hotel. Can recommend Koblenz old town for visit, lots of cafe's, bars and little squares with things going on. Stayed in Ibis centrum which had a car park attached so no problems there.
Sunday was spent watching the racing which was spoiled a little by some British weather that had come over (rain).
Monday was the day for trying the Boxster out on the Nordschliefe, or Groene holle (Green Hell) whatever you want to call it. unfortunately the track had bee booked until 17:00 by a company called McLaren who were testing their new project road car. So we decided to visit the village in the middle of the track where lunch was achieved whilst listening to the McLaren making it's way around (approx. 7.5 mins), from the café there is a small walk up to the track (splits the village in two) and first sight of what was in store, (wife suddenly looked concerned). Five o'clock came as did lot's of "boy racers" with their Nissans, Honda's and Corsa's all with no interior other than a couple of racing seats and lowered suspension and the ubiquitous bucket exhausts, lots of BMW's and motorbikes, with one motorbike blasting round two up!!.
Up to the barrier then and we were off, having decided that it was just going to be an "experience" and that time didn't matter we set off and as a reality kick saw a British ('85 reg) 911 over on the side, hope he managed to get sorted, but after taking the first corner and a Mondeo estate came up behind me the "experience" became sod it and the gearbox was used accordingly. what an EXPERIENCE!
Final time was 10 minutes 6 seconds and the best claim to fame is the McLaren followed me off, actually best part was wife needing 10 minutes to get out of car lol. Unfortunately she was somewhat distracted and failed to use her camera going round, ah well just have to go back then.
From the ring went to place recommended by others on this forum called Rudesheim am Rheine, superb Porsche driving road along the river bank. Lovely place to stay and took wife on a days cruise to make up for day before. From there travelled to Stuttgart, via lunch stop at Hockenheim circuit where a Ducati trackday was in process. Stuttgart was about visiting the Porsche museum, wow, what a superb place, immaculate in every way and no barriers anywhere. 911's obviously dominated but really great place to visit.
From Stuttgart it was on to Salzburg, travelling along I thought let's see what we can do so it was a build up from the usual 150kph we were cruising at and got up to 228kph before having to slow down for the only road-works we encountered, just as well as it was a nightmare!
Salzburg was spent doing the Sound of Music thing for the wife and a visit to the Red Bull Hangar and Headquarters to balance out. From Salzburg it was on to the Grossglockner as recommended by others on this thread, got to say thanks guys, wife loved it and of course what a driving road! Stayed in the little village of Heiligenblut where we awoke to a splendid view of the alps. From there it was travel back on the other side of the mountains which were again Porsche style roads up to Uberlingen near to the German/Swiss border on Lake Constance. On to Kaiserslautern for a night and then on to Brugges for two nights, strangely enough we had lunch on the hilltop looking over the circuit of Spa-Francorchamps. Then it was time to return home, we knew we were back in England when we arrived at the m25/m20 junction as we were suddenly static in traffic which was all the way around to the m11 junction, then further up just as we thought we could be moving we became bogged-down again to the A1. Several slow moving sessions (10mph wow) on the A1 followed until we got home. Only 8 hours from Dover to Wakefield!!
This holiday has made me wish I had bought a Porsche sooner and realise how versatile a "Sports" car can be. Many thanks to those who gave advice on what to see/visit and here's to the next time.

Your first ever lap of the 'Ring, on a tourist lap, was 10m6s? Impressive.

Good time!

I was last at the ring in may for the N24, awesome weekend, completely buggered up by my knee exploding and resulting with a summer mostly spent in hospital, but can not wait to get back there in 2014 for the N24 again and a weekend on the track, as long as it has not been sold to Disney or something by then!
