Hi everyone,

Been to work in my Cayman today and it was fine driving into work. When I was driving it home, it appeared to be louder than usual. You can hear the induction sound suck when I press the accelerator. It also sounds a bit more tinny and appears to be more responsive? The oil level is fine, there is no warning light on or nothing. I had the car serviced about 500 miles ago, a minor service and the garage said the air filter was fine.

Anyone know what it may be?

Thanks

Does it have sports chrono? Could you have switched it on by mistake? I'm not even sure the Cayman comes with it or PSE?

Hi Lee,

No it doesn't have pse or sport chrono, wish it did though, I love the pse. I don't know whether I should still be driving it? I don't want to harm the engine. It just sounds more roaring and you can really hear the suck in of air. When driving into work this morning it was fine, strange?

Not being facetious and please don't take this the wrong way, but have you had any ear problems, infections ,wax, water in ear from swimming, recent colds or catarrh or recent air travel?

Hi Lee,

Going to get it looked at tomorrow evening at my local independent Porsche garage. Was going to take the engine cover off and have a look myself, but the garage said that if something has come loose from underneath then you wouldn't see it from above. Fingers crossed it isn't anything serious. I will let you know the cause tomorrow.

It could just be something simple like the air filter intake hose has come off, that would give more induction noise I think? Not sure of the set up on a Cayman, where the hose is in relation to the driver.

Thats what I was thinking along the lines of. That seems the simplest explanation for the induction sound. You can get to the air filter housing from the top of the engine in the Cayman by taking off the engine cover behind the drivers seat, but I think the inlet pipe to the housing can only be got to from underneith the engine.

Hi everyone,

Got my Cayman fixed last night from my local independent Porsche garage. Great service from them, got them to sort my car after work at 7.30 in the evening!

The problem was quite simple. The induction system is put together in 3 parts. The air filter, air filter housing, and then the air box. The Cayman/Boxster air filters fit into the air filter housing by 4 plastic retaining clips. The housing is then screwed to the air box and sealed. It is common that the clips on the air filter become brittle and weak and can snap off. This is what happened to mine. One of the clips had snapped and this resulted in my air filter becoming ill fitted, therefore created a loud induction sound, and started to suck in dirty air.

The garage explained the problem and that it is a common problem on Cayman/Boxster's. He replaced the air filter, sealed it up and it was job done. Only charged me 30 minutes labour, even though I was there for over an hour and half talking Porsches!

Great stuff, nothing like a good result. :thumbright: We just need the good weather to keep up to enjoy the car. :D

BTW, Have we seen pictures of your car yet? I'm off to look and see if you've posted any. 8)
